Private travel health appointment
A pre-travel appointment covering vaccinations, antimalarials and health advice for your destination.
## What is a travel health appointment?
A travel health appointment is a consultation before you travel, to work out which vaccinations and
medication you need for where you are going. The clinician checks your destination, your itinerary
and your vaccination history, then gives the vaccines that are due and prescribes antimalarials
where they are needed.
- A destination-by-destination risk assessment
- Vaccinations given in the appointment where stock allows
- Antimalarial medication where it is required
- Practical advice on food, water, insect bites and sun
## Why go private for travel health?
Timing is the whole problem. Some courses need several weeks and more than one appointment, so the
constraint is usually getting seen soon enough rather than the appointment itself. Private clinics
also tend to stock the less common travel vaccines.
- Appointments at short notice, which matters for a course
- A wider range of vaccines held in stock
- Certificates issued where your destination requires one
## When should I book?
As early as you can — ideally six to eight weeks before you travel, because some vaccines need more
than one dose to be effective. It is still worth going if you have less time than that: a clinician
can often prioritise what will work in the time available.
